• Who stands in for someone else
• He does it instead of them

HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO FILL IN FOR SOMEBODY?

• Maybe they had a day off
• Or they were sick that day

THERE IS EVEN A SUBSTITUTE DOCTRINE IN THE BIBLE

• It is found in Isaiah 53:5-6

“He was pierced for our sin He was crushed for our iniquities.    The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him.    And by His stripes,  we are healed”

JESUS WAS OUR SUBSTITUTE

• Even though our we were sentenced to punishment
• He took it so we wouldn’t have to

WE CAN UNDERSTAND THAT BETTER

• If we change the pronouns
• If we let it become personal to us

AND FOR THAT

• I will take the bread and the cup
• And I will remember Him
