IN THE BOOK OF JAMES

• It says the prophet Elijah

• Was an ordinary man   …   much like us

THERE IS A STORY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT ABOUT HIM

• It took place on Mt. Carmel

• And it was a showdown of sorts

• Between the false God Ba’al 

• and our God - Jehovah God

850 OF BA’AL’s PROPHETS

• danced all day long

• calling fire down from heaven

• and nothing happened

WHEN THEY GOT DONE

• Elijah drenched the offering with water

• To make sure it wouldn’t burn

• Then he called upon God to burn it  … 

• and God did

SO WAS HE JUST LIKE US ?

• Well, he was and he wasn’t

HE WAS MUCH MORE FOCUSED

• And God was the object of his focus

• Sometimes, we get focused on the world

• All to forget about God

• And he was more assured in his belief than we are

• He never questioned where He stood with God

• And most of us do from time to time

BUT READING ON, WE SEE

• Where Queen Jezebel

• Threatened to behead him

AND ELIJAH DID THE SAME THING WE WOULD DO

• He ran, and he ran hard and fast

• Because He was afraid!

HE DIDN’T DO WHAT MANY OF US WOULD DO

• If we found ourselves in that same predicament

• He didn’t hang around and

• Trying to reach a compromise

• with the evil leaders

HAD HE COMPROMISED WITH THEM

• He would have compromised his belief in God

• He had to make a decision

• And he chose to stand with the Lord

WE ARE CALLED ON TO MAKE A DECISION, TOO

• Each time we take of the bread and drink

• Do we belong to Christ … 

• Or do we belong to the world ?

IF WE ENTER INTO COMMUNION

• Without having the dedication to belong to Jesus

• We are bringing judgment upon ourselves

SO I CALL UPON YOU THIS MORNING

• To fully examine yourself

• Make sure you don’t compromise

• Your faith in Christ  …  to please the world
